Bye bye Gordon

Mr Brown is understood to believe the row has been exaggerated by the media and has urged Labour MPs to look at the government’s overall tax changes, which he says have helped low-paid families.

How is loosing an additional £232 to tax each year an exaggeration by the media? The government has lost the plot. It’s time for a change.

Expenses

In the news today is some indication as to what MP’s are permitted to spend expenses on. To give you an idea, here’s a couple of things: Up to £10,000 for a new kitchen, £2,000 for furniture and £750 for a TV/Stereo for their second home.

That really riles me. How can an MP spend our tax money on items that we would normally pay for ourselves, out of our hard earned cash? Not to mention these are expenses for a second home.

If I, or you, were to try and claim back £10,000 from the taxman for a new kitchen, we’d probably find ourselves up in court on fraud charges. Why should an MP have any more rights to us?

Domain registry of America

The domain registry of America are scammers. With that bold statement out of the way, here’s why. They send out advertising that is deceptive and complicated. They prey on new users who have stepped into the world of domain names and webhosting in the hope that people fall into their little trap and pay them money. Here’s what one of their “letters” look like (click for bigger).

I’m not the only one who has a complaint with their deceptive letters. There’s plenty of examples by searching in Google.
Why I’d want to move away from my current registrar is beyond me. I pay about £8 a year for the domain they’re trying to get me to move, when they’d charge £18. Then there’s the five year deal they offer, which is double the price of the ten year offer I can get from my current registrar!

The other worrying aspect is that they don’t appear to be a registered limited company in the UK. Searching companies house brings back no results and there’s no UK contact information apart from an address that could turn out to be a PO box in London (I might check it out next time I’m near south Kensington). They appear to be a company in the USA as their telephone numbers all go back to New York. This means any details you give them are subject to US data protection, not the UK’s, which are far more stringent.

My suggestion to anyone who gets one of these letters is to bin it. You can try contacting them, but I wouldn’t waste your time as they’ve never replied to any of my complaints. Unfortunately, another of those scams operating outside of this countries remit.

Felt like a terrorist

This evening I’d like to show you this quote.

“Obviously he was just being a bit of an idiot. It never felt at all like he was a terrorist or anything.”

Asides from being an idiot, how the heck can you “feel” if someone’s a terrorist? Is it the Kalashnikov digging in your side whilst waiting to board a plane? The crazy eyes that scream terrorist at you? Or maybe it’s the eau de terrorist that they’re wearing? People say the stupidest things sometimes.

Cloverfield

cloverfield-poster.jpgI went to see Cloverfield last night and actually quite enjoyed the film. The film itself is very short when compared to traditional films, running at roughly an hour and thirty minutes including the adverts shown before!

The film is not too dissimilar from the shooting style of the Blair Witch Project, but much better. One audience member on the other side of the cinema got a little nauseous and threw up but asides from that I think it was well received.
One thing I did notice was when the film when deadly silent the entire cinema was also silent. Not even a rustle of sweet wrappers or popcorn could be heard. Very unusual!

Definitely a film to see at the cinema as you get much better sound and lets face it, sound makes a huge difference on a film like this.
