Size improvement

I installed the latest version of Apache last night and enabled a new module that wasn’t previously available under Apache 1.3; mod_deflate. This gives the following speed and size improvements over generally every page hosted here.

Size Improvements

By adding the following code to httpd.conf once mod_deflate is compiled into apache you too can achieve similar results.

SetOutputFilter DEFLATE

SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$ no-gzip dont-vary
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI \.(?:exe|t?gz|zip|bz2|sit|rar)$ no-gzip dont-vary

iCal Growl alerts

iCal GrowlI sometimes use iCal alerts to warn me of upcoming dates in my diary, mainly tax return bits and other boring stuff, but I’ve never been too enthused with the way iCal alerts me to those impending dates of doom.

Thankfully, I no longer need to suffer the mundane ways of iCal as there is a way to utilise Growl to alert you to upcoming important stuff. Thomas Aylott’s put together a couple of amendments to iCal’s inbuilt email routine, to allow Growl to be notified of those important dates. I’ve installed it and tried it out and it works well. Just as a side note, the sticky Growl notification won’t work if you’re using the Bezel or Music Video styles. They’re queue based and so therefore can’t sticky a notification otherwise the ones behind it won’t come through.

iStat Menus

iStat Menu Bar
The folks at iSlayer have just released a new menu bar, similar to their brilliant iStat Pro widget for Mac OS X.
Their new product allows you to customise a menu bar to show statistics about your system including hard drive usage, CPU and memory utilisation, temperature, fan speeds and network usage.

iStat Menu Bar Preferences

Initially the CPU option shows every core as a separate box in the menu bar, but this can be compacted down to just one box. Useful if you have eight cores such as my Mac Pro. There’s quite a few different ways to show the data that the software collects and I’ve managed to get it reasonably compact.I
I’m going to trial it out for a while and see if I get used to it. I like my menu bar to be clean and tidy and I’m still weighing up whether this makes it look messy or not.

WordPress Stats

You’re now able to use Automattic’s WordPress stats system for your self-hosted WordPress blog. This could be pretty neat for those not wanting to clog up their hosting with additional stats tracking programs. I’m quite happy with Mint for my stats at the moment though.

Honey

I’ve been adding a few honey pots to various different websites I run. I’ve also added several MX entries in order for random addresses to be created. This is my contribution to combating spam.
